Role overview

Nature Communications is seeking an Interim Associate or Senior Editor with expertise in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases or Clinical Vaccinology. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about science who are looking for a career beyond bench research and enjoy exploring scientific literature across various disciplines. You will play a crucial role in maintaining the high standards of this leading multidisciplinary Open Access journal, contributing to its continued success.

This position is offered on a fixed-term contract (maternity cover) and involves a hybrid working model, with opportunities to be based in either our London or Pune offices. You will report to a Chief Editor within the health and clinical sciences division and may collaborate with other Nature Portfolio journals. Responsibilities and journal assignments may adapt to evolving portfolio needs.

Responsibilities

  • Handle original research papers and collaborate with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and peer review oversight.
  • Make well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts based on expert advice.
  • Determine the representation of your subject area within the journal.
  • Liaise extensively with editors at other Nature family journals and with experts in the international scientific community.
  • Attend conferences and visit research institutions.
  • Commission and edit Reviews, and write Editorials.

Requirements

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a field related to Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases or Clinical Vaccinology.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field is essential.
  • A passion for science and a strong desire to learn more.
  • Demonstrated breadth of interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your specialty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in English (written and spoken).
  • Ability to read and assess the novelty, context, and implications of research submitted from diverse areas within the discipline.
  • Eagerness to travel and meet scientists worldwide, learn about their research, and engage with them about the journal's publishing criteria.

Desirable

  • Additional research experience is valuable but not required.
  • Editorial experience is not a prerequisite; however, applicants with significant editorial experience will be considered for Senior Editor positions.
