Job Description

Role overview

Pan Macmillan's Art & Design department is seeking an imaginative and skilled Artworker to join their dynamic team. This role is vital for preparing artwork for both print and digital mediums, contributing to the creation of cover designs across all genres. The team works collaboratively with other departments from initial brief to final print-ready files, sourcing and developing illustrations, photography, and original designs.

As an Artworker, you will report to the Studio Manager and be instrumental in producing premium artwork. You will transform creative design concepts into technically perfect, print-ready files, collaborating closely with designers, editors, and production teams to ensure visual elements align with project goals.

Responsibilities

  • Produce high-quality artwork for print, ensuring technical and visual consistency across all adult and select children's imprints.
  • Resolve technical print issues by liaising between Design and Production teams, including direct communication with external printers for complex details like spot colours, foils, and embossing.
  • Collaborate with Editorial to provide artwork for review and approval.
  • Coordinate with Production and Editorial on Critical Path timelines, proofing, corrections, and asset retrieval.
  • Supply Sales, Marketing, and Rights teams with necessary visual assets, sales materials, professional-grade mock-ups, highly finished visuals, and dummies for presentations.
  • Manage data entry and reporting within the Biblio system to ensure accurate publishing information and support Critical Path control.
  • Actively engage with new tools and workflows to improve team efficiency and innovation.

Requirements

  • High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) with the ability to take a design from concept to print-ready artwork.
  • Proven artwork experience within a book publishing environment, demonstrating a solid understanding of book design and print-production processes.
  • Methodical approach to file management, proofing, and asset retrieval while managing multiple projects to meet tight deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships across internal teams (Design, Production, Editorial, and Sales).
  • Comfortable working with workflow systems and tools, specifically Google Workspace and publishing management systems (ideally Biblio).
  • Active dedication to promoting diverse voices and inclusive practices, ensuring the workplace and publishing reflect the communities served.
  • Collaborative approach to building a supportive and vibrant environment.
  • Strong drive for learning and readiness to embrace different perspectives and new digital tools.
  • Foundation of openness and honesty, taking responsibility for actions and learning from mistakes.

Desirable

skills

  • Prior experience directly liaising with external printers regarding complex finishes.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: £33,000 – 40,000 (dependent on experience and expertise)
  • 28 days’ annual leave increasing with years of service + bank holidays
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Discounted private medical insurance or health cash plan
  • Group income protection scheme
  • Enhanced family pay and leave
  • Flexible working hours and summer hours (early finish on a Friday during summer months)
  • 2 Volunteer Days per year
  • 75% off all Pan Macmillan books and regular staff book sales
  • Season ticket loan/advance
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Discounts on shopping and gym memberships
  • Christmas club savings
  • Daily free breakfast and monthly company lunch
